We will score 650 in the first innings and put them in says R Ashwin
Australia piled up 530 runs Courtesy Steve Smith’s 192 runs and Steve Smith’s 74. In reply, India ended the second day at 108 runs for the loss of 1 wicket. Here is what R Ashwin had to say on India’s performances during the press conference after the end of day 2.
Journalist: On India’s performance on day 2:
Ashwin: We looked to get out very early this morning and that was the plan when we started off the day but unfortunately (Steven) Smith batted extremely well and they got bit too many runs for liking. But if you take a look at the overall game, this score is pretty par for this wicket and the wicket seems to be slow and flat. We will take tonight’s score of 108-1 and we will look to pile on the runs tomorrow (third day).
On the tactic behind bowling shorter stuff to Brad Haddin even though he seemed comfortable:
Did he seem comfortable?? Ok, if you say so (laughs). We thought he has a genuine weakness over there and we will continue to target in the next innings and test match as well. He doesn’t look comfortable and that is the reason behind that.
Inspite of Australia scoring 500 for the third time, Is this the best you (Ashwin) on Australian soil, especially yesterday?
Last two days has been really hard working for me. I worked really hard and put in a real honest efforts and had been disciplined in the way I bowled. I think I was good in patches and this is probably one of my best performance overseas.
What was the thinking behind being under bowled today? Did Dhoni say something to you?
Not really. I am not someone who stands next to him and ask him for a bowl or anything like that. The idea was to exploit the new ball as much as possible and this is what I think and hope that it was in that way. I was prepared to bowl and I had plans ready as I was clear in what I am going to do.
Is the Australian total was above par given the nature of the wicket but did they get away from you?
No not till the last hour or so when Steve Smith teed off a bit. Until then we were ready for it and we thought we should delay the run scoring as much as possible because there was not much of the lateral movement to exploit and we had our plans to make sure Smith doesn’t take it away. But as it happened, Smith played really well and towards the end, he teed off.
Is the wicket improved in the second day?
The wicket was very slow yesterday morning and stared off very slow yesterday. The drives were not possible and as the day went on it came back to normal. I don’t know what was under the wicket and what was going on. Today, it was pretty good and the ball came on to the bat pretty well.
Did you have any way to get Steven Smith out?
If anybody is in such form, you hope that you have some luck and get them out early. But as far as I am concerned, I make sure that I try and see how difficult I can make him to bat. Having said that, he has batted really well and credits should be given to him.
How do you see the game progressing? Do you think is there any chance to comeback if your team bat well?
I think I am no one to comment on this game. But one thing I can say, We will make 650 and put them back in.
