We Won’t Carry Out a Parallel Probe on Pandurang Salgaonkar with ICC – MCA

Claiming that running a parallel probe in the case related to Gahunje pitch curator Pandurang Salgaonkar will not make much sense, Abhay Apte, president of the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA), has said the cricket board would wait for the completion of International Cricket Council’s (ICC) investigation.

During a sting operation conducted by India Today before the second ODI between India and New Zealand in Pune, Salgaonkar was caught red-handed on camera while revealing the pitch detains to the reporters who were disguised as media personals.

Salgaonkar had not only revealed the details of the pitch but had also agreed to alter it as per the ‘bookies’ demands. He had also taken the disguised reporters near the pitch, which is against the laws set by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The news outlet had revealed the story just a few hours before the game, and Apte immediately suspended Salgaonkar from all MCA roles. However, with the ICC also all set to probe the matter, Apte said that the MCA would not do it, and would instead wait for the ICC’s verdict.

“I had called for an emergent working committee meeting on Thursday, and it has endorsed my decision,” Apte told TOI. “The ICC has also opened an inquiry. We won’t carry out a parallel probe. It won’t make any sense,” he added.

Apte also said that apex body of the game is set to thoroughly investigate the matter before stating that the MCA is expecting an outcome within two months.

“Salgaonkar will be given a chance to explain his side of the story. The ICC process is expected to happen in Dubai, and we are expecting their verdict within two months,” he said.

Pune pitch was in the spotlight earlier this year too when the Test against Australia lasted just three days.

Due to the incident, the second game was also in doubt, as the decision was left on the match-referee to give the green light. But fortunately the match went well, and the scores were very contradictory to what Salgaonkar had claimed.

The curator had claimed that the pitch would be a batting paradise and would witness a high scoring game. However, New Zealand could manage only 230 for nine in the allotted 50 overs while Indian batsmen also could not play their natural game before chasing down the total with six wickets in hand.
