We’ll have to learn to bat in the second innings: Chandimal
It could have been a plain draw in a rain-affected encounter but turned out to be one of the enthralling encounters between Indian and Sri Lanka in the fifth day of the match. Sri Lanka came out to bat in the second innings with a target of 231 runs which was looking impossible to chase. However, the Indian pace attack was on absolute fire in the last session of the match as they removed both the openers within two runs. While Sri Lanka was struggling to save the match at 75 for 7, both the umpires converged together and called it for the day due to bad light.
India piled on 352 for eight before declaring in the second innings. Indian opening batsman KL Rahul added only six runs to his overnight score of 73 runs before getting out to Suranga Lakmal. Virat Kohli looked fluent as he brought his 50th international hundred with good looking inside out for six off Lakmal. Virat Kohli steadied the Indian innings as they lost wickets at regular intervals from the other end.
In reply, Sri Lankan batsmen looked uncomfortable in front of the pace duo of Mohammad Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. They were steaming in with the red cherry as the Sri Lankan batsmen found it tough to handle some good swing bowling. They lost wickets at regular intervals and were not able to stitch some good partnership. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the pick of the bowler from the second innings as he was magical with the ball and took 4 out of 7 wickets that fell. However, it was again the bad light that saved the day for the touring Sri Lankan from another defeat.
At the post-match presentation ceremony, Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal said:
“It was (a good toss to win), especially in these conditions. It was a good game of cricket and we played well, competed well. Until the last session, we fought really well but unfortunately, last 10-15 overs were pressure to us. Lakmal is unbelievable, throughout the last two years. He’s the one who, as a captain, you can trust. He’s a really good bowler. Really happy that Rangana scored the runs but unfortunately spinners didn’t come into play. We’ll have to learn to bat in the second innings. In UAE vs. Pakistan too we didn’t bat well in the 2nd innings. We can be a lot better if we learn that.”
