West Indies batting legend and one of the most respected cricketer Brian Lara says that West Indies are lacking team unity at the moment and this could cost them the World Cup.
West Indies cricket came under a huge crisis when the players did not get their match fees which resulted in abandonment of the India tour. Due to this, the BCCI demanded a whooping $42 million as compensation. The West Indies team is currently in South Africa with the contractual problems behind them, said team manager Richie Richarson. The 30 man probales squad for the World Cup was announced on Monday.
All the big players name were present in that line up and the final 15 will be decided by January 7th. Lara said that the team should be united and that will prove to be helpful and will atleast create some chance for them to win the World Cup. According to him, not big players but big teams win the cup.
“We will have problems in terms of unity, in terms of performance,” the 45-year-old, who retired after the 2007 World Cup, told reporters on a recent trip to Australia.
“We have great players, but great players don’t win the World Cup, great teams win the World Cup.
“We have to encourage all the guys. We have Chris Gayle and (Kieron) Pollard and Dwayne Smith and Dwayne Bravo but if these guys are not performing, and that will happen, you need to have everybody contributing.
“That’s where we need to improve and if we were to falter in the World Cup that’s where it will happen.”
Brian Lara too had his share of problems with the WICB but he feels that the BCCI should not ruthlessly go to claim their compensation.
“The fine is one thing, there is other intricate stuff we need to sort out to get back to being a competitive nation,” he said.
