Westley, Wood and Jennings Included in England Lions Squad

Three young English players Tom Westley, Mark Wood and Keaton Jennings have been named in the England Lions squad which will travel to Australia for a training camp in November and December. The trio has already played Test cricket for the national team this summer and will be in line to play the Ashes if they are required. Westley was one of the stars during Essex’s triumphant campaign in the County Championship and was rewarded with a call-up alongside Dan Lawrence and Jamie Porter.

Ben Duckett has also been part of the national team in the past but was removed from the squad during England’s tour of India in 2016 where he struggled to pick Ravichandran Ashwin and failed prey to the offie on five occasions. Another member of the squad with international experience is Liam Livingstone. Meanwhile, Porter and Lawrence made debut for England Lions this season, and the English selectors have named four new players who are yet to play for the Lions- Dom Bess, Alex Davies, Paul Coughlin and Amar Virdi.

National selector James Whitaker said:

“This camp provides an opportunity for emerging young talent and some players with international experience to work hard on their game in Australia, in excellent facilities, under the guidance of Andy Flower and our other head coaches. The players selected have a range of experience, and we believe they are an exciting group.”

“This is a great chance for them to impress before we select another Lions squad for the games against West Indies A in the second half of the winter. We would expect a number of other players to be in contention for that squad – for example Haseeb Hameed was not considered for the Australia camp to avoid him having to rush back from the injury he suffered recently playing for Lancashire.”

The Lions squad will spend a week at the Performance Centre in Loughborough before flying to Brisbane on November 14 for a two-week camp with the focus on the red ball. They will be playing a 3-day match against a Queensland XI at the Allan Border Oval from 27th to 29th November.
