India’s head coach Ravi Shastri has heaped high praise on Rohit Sharma. The right-hander had batted at the top of his game in the recently concluded series against South Africa. Rohit had amassed 529 runs in the series at a Bradmanesque average of 132.25.
The flamboyant batsman scored twin centuries in the first Test match to grab his opening chance with both hands. Rohit scored 176 runs in the first innings and scored another sublime knock of 127 runs in the second dig.
Rohit Sharma was brilliant against South Africa.
Furthermore, he carried his good form going as he scored his maiden Test double century in the third Test at Ranchi. Thus, Rohit Sharma was awarded the Man of the series.
Subsequently, Ravi Shastri believes if Rohit Sharma can continue his dream form going, it would be great for the Indian team. The stylish batsman has the skills to take the game away from the opposition and if he can get going, there is no stopping him. Shastri also likened Rohit Sharma with former Indian opener Virender Sehwag.
Ravi Shastri said while talking to Cricbuzz, “What Rohit Sharma has managed in this series is phenomenal. He took complete control. When someone like Rohit finds this kind of confidence in a format, I’ll only say this: ‘Any opposition will be wary’. He’s potentially in the space that Virender Sehwag once occupied. The options were open for him if he wanted to walk in as an opener. It is something we had discussed a couple of years ago. He finally made up his mind to enter that space.
“His ability to convert 100s into 200s is something we all know. At the top, if someone like Rohit finds his feet in Test cricket, and with a beast of run-maker like Virat to follow, what else can a team ask for?”.
Rohit Sharma has the skills to hit the ground running. In fact, he had scored 212 runs off just 255 balls in the final Test match against the Proteas. It would be interesting to note how Rohit will perform in overseas conditions. However, in the meantime, there is no doubt that the limited-overs vice-captain has taken the opening challenge like fish to water.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma will also hold the captaincy reins for the upcoming three-match series against Bangladesh as Virat Kohli is rested. The first T20I will take place at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on 3rd November.
