The Indian team achieved a big milestone when it locked horns against New Zealand in the first Test at Kanpur. It was India’s 500th Test.
To make the occasion a memorable one, the Board of Control for Cricket in India held a function on the eve of the first Test. The board decided to felicitate the former Indian captains before the commencement of the first Test. The former Indian captains that were felicitated were Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Sunil Gavaskar, M.S. Dhoni and Kapil Dev. On the occasion, Uttar Pradesh governor Ram Naik honoured the stalwarts with mementoes and shawl. Besides Tendulkar, Gavaskar, Dhoni and Kapil, the other former players who were honoured were Ajit Wadekar, Ravi Shastri, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble, K Srikkanth and Mohammad Azharuddin.
Before that, the BCCI organised a dinner on Wednesday night in the honour of captains. It was also attended by the Indian team. However, it was not attended by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the most decorated captain of the Indian team. His omission was noticed by one and all since he is the most successful captain of the nation.
But before you assume anything wrong, let us tell you the reason for his absence: Actually, MS Dhoni is currently busy with the promotion of his upcoming biopic ‘M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story’ and so could not take time out from his busy schedule to attend the dinner party. The much-awaited biopic is scheduled to hit the theatres on September 30.
The Indian team has now become just the fourth team to play 500 or more Tests. India started its journey in 1932 and so far 32 captains have led the team. The other teams to play 500 or more Tests are England, Australia and West Indies.
