Why didn’t the seniors get selected? A message to the fans.
If you are a cricket fan, with the game all the time, the thing that the selectors did not select the senior players, especially Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan should not surprise you.
As a cricket fan, I am totally content with the selection committee. However, this is India. In India, there is emotion, sentiments, past history, attachment to a player comes into picture. People and fans in India couldn’t digest the fact that the man who won us two World Cup’s, Yuvraj Singh, the man who played 2 fantastic innings in 2 finals, Gautam Gambhir are not selected. The so called cricket and Indian Team fans took on the BCCI for the such a selection. They even passed comments on MS Dhoni, which I felt is weird. How come MS Dhoni select a team, that too for a World Cup?
All I want to tell the Indian fans is to think practically. Yes, these players have given us a lot of memories and they have made India proud. However, the condition in which they are now and the poor form in which they are now cannot be ignored. A World Cup is a big stage. India can’t select a team which is in poor form just because they are seniors and they have done it in the past. Emotions don’t matter when it comes to selecting a team for a major tournament like a World Cup. History is history, it’s gone. At present, Virender Sehwag, the man who scored 2 triple centuries and came close to a triple hasn’t been in the form which the selectors wanted him to be. Virender Sehwag’s lacklusture batting and a poor average of just 19.5 in 13 innings which he played in the Ranji Trophy and an average of 21 in 6 games in the Vijay Hazare trophy just goes to show how poor his form is. Yuvraj has averaged just 26 in 8 matches in Ranji Trophy while his average is just 29 in 7 Vijay Hazare trophy games. Harbhajan Singh’s poor form after the World Cup 2011 continues as he performed below expectations in the Ranji and Vijay Hazare matches. Zaheer Khan is injury proned and hasn’t played competitive cricket for a while. Selectors can’t take a risk by selecting him.
Gautam Gambhir’s average of 48.16 in 13 games of Ranji trophy looks decent on paper but he lacks consistency. His feet wasn’t moving well in England and you don’t want to play a gamble selecting him for the World Cup?
If you see, in teams like South Africa and Australia, seniority doesn’t matter, performance does. South Africa’s skipper Greame Smith and veteran batsman Jacques Kallis were out of form and they were axed from the side which turned into retirement later. Everytime decisions important as such can’t be taken based on emotions and fans demand. Obviously, we all respect the players for what they did in the past, but it is not possible to select them on that basis.
Morever, there were people who said, Team India without the 5 players are going to go out in group stages, RIP Team India pictures were trending on social network. For all those people, please go and watch the Champions Trophy where a young Team India without these seniors won the Cup, that too in England. One more thing, these 5 players who you say can bring experience, Team India with these 5 players back in 2003 reached the finals and and that time, 4 out of the 5 were new to cricket. Team India won the 2007 World T20 without the senior players like Sachin, Saurav, Kumble, Dravid, Zaheer etc. So, don’t base your opinions on just the World Cup selection, there is more to come. Support the Indian Team, if you are a true Indian cricket fan.
