The ongoing annual conference of International Cricket Council (ICC) in Edinburgh is discussing possible replacement of Anil Kumble at the Cricket Committee. Anil Kumble has been appointed as BCCI coach and so he will not be able to continue as chairman of prestigious Cricket Committee which features only recognized cricketers. The Committee, apart from Kumble, also features Rahul Dravid, Mahela Jayawardene, and Sunil Gavaskar like eminent cricketers.
There is a speculation that Sourav Ganguly may replace Kumble. Like Kumble, Ganguly too is an established cricketer and he is a suitable person to replace Kumble. Ganguly, earlier, also expressed his wish to join the committee. Sourav is currently the Cricket Association of Bengal president and technical Committee of BCCI chairman which is equivalent to ICC’s Cricket Committee.
However, this post neither belongs to BCCI nor the cricketer represents BCCI. ICC will take a call whom they will appoint.
However, neither BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke nor Ganguly himself confirmed that he would quit the BCCI post and would join the ICC’s Cricket Committee.
However, the panel is often criticized as toothless because their recommendations ultimately have to be approved by the administrators. Most of the time their recommendations often ditched as ICC members don’t think that will help cricket and their interest.
The members of the panel have to attend the meeting once in a year while the chairman of the board attends the administration four times in a year.
However, current chairman Anil Kumble, who appointed as Indian captain and will start his work with the Indian team, expressed his inability to attend the meeting. But Kumble didn’t step down from the post.
Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly after retiring from international cricket joined the administration of cricket. He started as joint secretary of CAB and then become the president of the Bengal’s cricket governing the body. He is a very influential in Indian cricket.
Ganguly has recently selected Anil Kumble as Indian coach along with two former Indian batsmen VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar.
