Will Gautam Gambhir replace KL Rahul for the second Test match?
A hamstring injury to KL Rahul can prove to be a boon for Indian discarded opener Gautam Gambir as according to reports KL Rahul might not be fit for the second Test match which is to be played in Kolkata; Gautam Gambhir might get a call to replace the dashing opener of Indian cricket team.
Reports also suggest that it is the head coach Anil Kumble who has asked team management to call Gautam Gambhir as a backup for KL Rahul. If KL Rahul is not fit before the second Test match, then Gambhir will walk into the team in his place but that does not guarantee him a place in playing XI as in that case Virat Kohli will have two options before him, both let handed openers.
Looking at current form, Gautam Gambhir is the favourite among the two but we know that Gambhir does not enjoy a good tuning with the Test captain Virat Kohli and that may go against him. Here is when the role of coach will come into play as Gambhir has played a lot with Anil Kumble, Gambir was also a member of Indian Test team when Kumble was the captain of the team. Kumble knows Gambhir’s power against spin which is probably the reason why he might be called.
Gautam Gambhir is in a brilliant form right now as the left-handed batsmen struck four half centuries in five innings, which includes two nervous nineties in recently concluded Pink ball Duleep trophy. He led his team to a successful campaign as well. These things go in his favour.
An official statement from BCCI is still awaited and it will surely be the rebirth of Gautam Gambhir in international cricket if he is called up to replace KL Rahul.
A call up to Indian squad will also be a boon for Unmukt Chand as he will be handed over reins to lead Delhi team in the upcoming Ranji Trophy for few matches.
The second Test match will be the 250th Test match which Indian team is set to play on its home soil, this time, CAB has organised a jamboree before the start of the game as they will be honouring Mohammed Shami and Wriddhiman Saha before the start of the game. Along with that, the newly installed Lord’s stadium like Bell will also be rung to mark the start of the game.
Kapil Dev will ring the bell to mark the start of the game.
