Will an inexperienced bowling lineup hurt India in ODI series?
The newly appointed selection panel has named the ODI squad for the first three ODIs against New Zealand. While many have been shocked by the inclusion of Suresh Raina ahead of Yuvraj Singh, there is one more area where the selectors might have got it wrong.
Selectors have decided to rest both Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the view of long home season coming this season. However, with two of the India’s most relied players rested coupled with the back injury to Bhuvneshwar Kumar and chikungunya to Ishant Sharma, the Indian team will have an inexperienced bowling unit for the series.
The most experienced bowler named for the series is Umesh Yadav who has played in 59 ODIs so far but lacks discipline despite the pace which will be a sign of worry for MS Dhoni. The other named bowlers are Dhawal Kulkarni, Jasprit Bumrah, Jayant Yadav and Amit Mishra.
Dhawal Kulkarni has been very impressive in the domestic circuit in the past few years but has failed to break into Team India as he was often called up to the Zimbabwe series after the IPL. He has a great opportunity to break into the team as his experience in domestic level could prove crucial to be the spearhead of the bowling unit.
However, he has so far played only 11 ODIs and is the only one who could spearhead the attack which might cause the problem for India as they will face a better ranked New Zealand who has been very impressive in the limited overs formats over the last two to three years.
Jasprit Bumrah has looked impressive but we cannot guarantee the level of skills he could exhibit in crunch situations as he does not have an experienced bowler like Ashish Nehra to guide him which could be a major difference.
Jayant Yadav is yet to play at the highest level and we might not see him feature for the side as he still lacks the exposure to a bigger stage which could pave way for Amit Mishra who has plenty of talent but also have plenty of controversies off the field.
Amit Mishra despite making his debut over a decade ago has managed only 31 ODIs till date. He would be the primary spinner for MS Dhoni for the first three ODIs and will look to make the most of the opportunity.
Umesh Yadav could be drafted in on a bouncy pitch which offers assistance to pace as he is very good with his pace but lacks discipline as he has an economy of 6 even after playing 59 ODIs. The new selection panel has also decided to rest Mohammed Shami which leaves Dhoni with an inexperienced bowling unit.
