Former Team India swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag was honoured by the Delhi District Cricket Association on Tuesday as the Gate No.2 on the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium was named as the ‘Virender Sehwag” Gate. India is all set to play New Zealand in the opening T20I against the Black Caps and a day before the start of the T20I series Sehwag was present at the small function.
A destructive batsman during his playing days, Sehwag later addressed the media and said that he was honoured to have a gate named after him at his home ground where he has played most of his cricket as a young budding cricketer.
“It is a great honour and today we have a gate named after a cricketer but later we can have dressing room, stands and other things named after cricketers. It’s a good thing and positive move from DDCA. I had a wish that whenever such a function happens, we should call all the cricketers who have represented Delhi and India,” Sehwag said.
Sehwag also recalled the names of the former cricketers whom he had played with in Delhi and also the members of the team when he was first included in the Delhi Ranji Trophy squad. Meanwhile, his childhood buddy Ashish Nehra is all set to play his final international match for India at the Feroz Shaha Kotla Stadium tomorrow against New Zealand. When asked about the same Sehwag in a joking mood said:
”We will talk about it tomorrow. Today is my day.”
Over the years Sehwag has been a role model for young budding cricketers. He is still regarded as one of the most destructive batsmen to have ever played the game. Sehwag said that it would be motivating for any young cricketer entering the ground to see the name of Sehwag.
“Any young cricketer will get motivated reading the name. Virender Sehwag played here as a kid and when he left there is a gate named after him so if I can also play for U19, U16, U23 or Ranji for Delhi and then represent India, then a gate, stand or something will be after my name,” he said.
