Will Pucovski, an Australian batsman, aims to return to action next month after suffering his latest concussion, Victoria coach Chris Rogers said on Thursday. The youngster opener suffered the 10th concussion of his career when he was struck on the helmet by a ball in a net session while training for Victoria this month.
Will Pucovski Targeting 2nd Shield Game: Chris Rogers
Australian cricketer Will Pucovski is aiming to return to the field next month after recovering from his latest concussion. His coach Chris Rogers said that the opener would miss the opening game of Victoria in Sheffield Shield. Will Pucovski suffered yet another concussion after getting hit on the helmet by a ball during a net session earlier this month.
“He looks pretty good, so he’s targeting the second Shield game,” coach Rogers said. “He’s a pretty resilient guy now – if you go through (this) many setbacks, you have to have something about you.”
Will Pucovski played 1 Test, only scoring 72 runs with a fifty, and his highest was 62. The debutant injured his shoulder while trying in vain to stop the ball at mid-wicket in the second session of the final day in the 3rd Test at Sydney against India. He missed the first two Tests against India due to a concussion injury but scored 62 and 10 in the 3rd Test after making his debut.
Chris Rogers: Australian Selectors May Consider Will Pucovski If He Score Runs
Will Pucovski’s history of concussion issues could mean the opener is sidelined for at least part of the five-Test Ashes series against England, which starts on December 8 in Brisbane. But Chris Rogers backed the opener to make a late claim for selection, highlighting his calibre.
He has played 24 first-class matches where he amassed 1816 runs averaging 53.41. He has hit 6 tons and as many fifties. In November 2020, he hit back-to-back two double tons for Victoria against South and West Australia.
“He’s showed before that he can hit the ground running as he did last year in the two Sheffield Shield games when he got two 200s,” Rogers said.
“If he was good enough to come and do something like that again, I think the Australian selectors would definitely have something to consider.”
Rogers also said that if Will Pucovski managed to perform with the bat in Sheffield Sheild 2021-22 like the last season, Australian selectors might give him a chance in The Ashes 2021-22. Will Pucovski has played only one Test for Australia so far. In 2 innings, he has scored 72 runs with one half-century. He was given a national call-up due to his excellent batting performance at the domestic circuit.
