Chairman of Selectors MSK Prasad has revealed that a call on the future of Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni will be taken only after taking vital inputs from captain Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri. With all due respect to Dhoni and Yuvraj, they haven’t been the same old match winners which they used to be a few years back. Despite few brilliance knocks here and there, the duo has lacked consistency which had led to several questions being raised on these two greats.
Even former captain Mohammad Azharuddin besides accepting the fact that the duo has been stalwarts of Indian cricket conceded that they don’t have the same fire power which they used to possess a few years back. Barring a century in the same match against England earlier in the year, the duo hasn’t done anything substantial to retain their place over such a long period of time.
“We will see, we need to talk on that. We will have to take a decision, let’s see how it goes. We all know who can add value. Again, we will go slot by slot. We should know when to take a call. It’s not that suddenly you take a call and you are nowhere. You can’t be totally unprepared, so we need to be balanced on that aspect,” Prasad was quoted as saying by Wisden India.
After handing over the reign to Virat Kohli ahead of the ODI series against England, Dhoni’s place in the side has been scrutinised due to his inability to finish off matches like earlier. Though he still remains one of the fittest and agile cricketers in the team, there is a certain Rishabh Pant who is giving him tough for a spot in the team.
With the 2019 World Cup coming up in a couple of years time, it is necessary for the team management to access the value of Yuvraj and Dhoni in the team given the fact that both will be 37 by then. India has some tremendous young players waiting in the wings and if Dhoni and Yuvraj’s place can’t be justified for the 2019 World Cup then youngsters must be given chance straight away to make himself ready for the quadrennial event.
