Wisden Names Virat Kohli as ‘Leading Cricketer’ for the Third Time in a Row

On Wednesday (April 10), the talismanic Team India skipper and batsman Virat Kohli was announced as the ‘Leading Cricketer’ of the world, for third straight time since 2017. The reputed organisation Wisden has revealed it in its yearly Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack.

The publication in this year’s edition of the book has achieved the top position on the basis of his sheer performance and domination vice versa.

Over the year’s, Kohli’s transformation has been remarkable. He has been indispensable for the Team India.

After scoring mere 134 runs in 2014 on English tour, Kohli scored 593 runs at an average of over 59 in the five-match Test series against England in 2018.

“Despite finishing on the losing side, India captain Virat Kohli shone with the bat, laying to rest his struggles in England in 2014. His Test batting, especially in England, was magnificent, while his 50-over form moved to a new level, if that was possible,” Wisden editor Lawrence Booth stated in a release.

Apart from the ‘Leading Cricketer of the Year,’ Kohli has found his name among Wisden’s five cricketers of the year.

Interestingly, England women’s cricket team batter Tammy Beaumont has found a spot. Also, England wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler and exciting youngster Sam Curran made it to the list by quite a distance.

Besides, Rory Burns had made it to the list. Burns has also served as the skipper who won the County Championship for Surrey.

In 2018, the run-machine has accumulated 2,735 runs across formats in the international fold. Subsequently, it has paved him a way to bag all-three coveted awards under the tutelage of world cricket governing body; International Cricket Council (ICC).

During that period, the world-class batsman slammed 11 hundreds. Eventually, he has scored the bulk of runs at an average of 68.37.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan is the Leading Twenty20 Cricketer for a second straight year. Also, Smriti Mandhana has been picked as the Leading Cricketer in the women’s cricket.
