I wish to continue playing T20, ODI cricket: Shahid Afridi
Former Pakistan T20 skipper Shahid Afridi has downplayed the rumours of taking retirement from the game. The all-rounder was severely criticised for his ineffective on-field tactics by fans and from then team manager and head coach after the conclusion of World T20 where his team won just one match. In his post-WT20 report, Intikhab Alam called Afridi absolutely clueless in terms of on-field tactics and off-field leadership.
The then Pakistan head coach Waqar Younis recommended keeping Afridi away from the team in his report.
Younis said: “We lost to New Zealand, Asia Cup and the World T20 due to poor captaincy. Over several occasions, I had made it clear that Shahid Afridi was not performing with the bat, ball or as a captain but I was not listened to.”
Following the disastrous World T20 campaign, Afridi was forced to resign from captaincy and rumours of him taking retirement were doing the rounds.
However, in an interview with BBC Urdu on Sunday, Afridi made it clear that he wants to continue playing T20 and ODI cricket.
“I wish to continue playing T20, ODI cricket, whether it is at the national or domestic level or leagues … I think I am fit for the game,” he said in response to questions posted by fans on Facebook Live.
Having seen with cricketer turned politician Imran Khan on many occasions, a fan also asked Afridi whether he is contemplating the idea of entering politics.
“I wish to enter politics but some well wishers and elders advise me against it,” the 36-year-old replied.
“Who is a politician? In my eyes, a politician is a servant of the people and he should serve people. I can do that without entering politics through my welfare organisation,” he added.
The all-rounder also said that for the time being his future plan is to look after his Shahid Afridi Foundation. Afridi expressed his keen desire to establish a school for the less privileged.
