DNA is currently running a very interesting story. As per that news item, the BCCI sources are stated to have told Zee Media that the board has allowed the wives of Indian cricketers to join the team in Australia. It appears that this decision has been taken following India’s defeat to Australia in the second Test at Brisbane. If this happens to be true, it will certainly boost the morale of the visiting Indian cricketers. In fact, nowadays the schedule of cricketers remains so tight that they do not get much time to be spent with the family. Therefore, this step will perhaps prove to be very fruitful as after trailing by 0-2, the players might be feeling little bit demoralized.
It is not out of place to mention that earlier the BCCI had banned girlfriends of players from accompanying or joining them on overseas tours. Also, while streamlining the rules, the board had also placed restrictions on the duration of stay for wives of cricketers. The above mentioned rules came into effect after India’s disappointing tour of England when the team lost three straight games after winning the Lord’s Test.
However, as far as Virat Kohli is concerned, he will not have any chance to have the company of Anushka Sharma as the rule banning girlfriends still remains in place. Those few lucky enough to be married, like captain MS Dhoni, R Ashwin, Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay, must be feeling privileged and happy with the introduction of the above rule.
Let us hope that captain MS Dhoni’s lady luck works magically as so far team India has been struggling hard to register a victory.
