Worcestershire’s Ross Whiteley entered the record books by hitting six sixes in an over but finished on the losing side after David Willey’s whirlwind century (118) helped Yorkshire to prevail in the high-scoring encounter and climb to the top of the NatWest T20 Blast North Group.
Worcestershire’s decision to bowl first turned out to be the futile one, as Willey slammed 118 off just 55 balls – 84 of which came in only boundaries (9 fours 8 sixes).
Barring Adam Lyth’s 31, none of the Yorkshire batsmen managed to cross the 20-run mark but Willey’s stunning onslaught propelled them to a massive 233 for six in the allotted 20 overs. Such was the brutality of Willey’s innings that Australian pacer John Hastings finished with figures of two for 58 in just 3 overs.

In reply, Worcestershire was not looking in contention till the 15th over when they were reeling at 136 for four still needing an improbable 98 from the last five overs. However, the match turned on its head when Karl Carver came out to bowl the 16th over, as Whiteley slammed six sixes in that over which also included a wide. A brilliant seventeenth over from Steven Patterson where he conceded just four firmly put Yorkshire in command of the proceedings of the game before Willey dismissed Whiteley for 65 off only 26 balls including two fours and eight sixes to all but end Worcestershire’s fight back, as they ended on 196 for seven.

“It was the right time in the game for me to go for it. It was all or nothing. Unfortunately for the bowler, it was a short boundary on the leg-side,” Whiteley said after the game.
“I had the mentality that I was going to go for it before I got in. I hit the first out of the screws and needed to keep going for the team, not for that achievement. It’s something I never really thought I’d do in professional cricket.
“Personal milestone are great, but it’s hard to get away from the defeat. It’s pretty tough to take. We’ve lost four out of five and are right down at the bottom. Obviously, we have to bounce back. There’s no reason why we can’t,” he added.
Brief Scores: Yorkshire 233/6 in 20 overs (David Willey 118; John Hastings 2-58) beat Worcestershire 196/7 in 20 overs (Ross Whiteley 65, Joe Clarke 51; Adil Rashid 2-20, Tim Bresnan 2-42) by 37 runs.
