Well, for last two days, the coach of Pakistan cricket team was under the limelight for walking away from a post match press conference when he was simply asked to clarify as to why the wicketkeeper of Pakistan, Sarfraz Ahmed was not given a chance earlier.
It is important to highlight that wicketkeeper batsman Sarfraz Ahmed not only did splendid keeping by sending six batsmen back to pavilion but also gave a vital contribution of 49 runs in the victory of Pakistan over South Africa.
Now, coach Waqar Younis has attempted to play down the controversy over the selection of wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed, saying he is a patriotic Pakistani and will never do anything to harm the team or the country.
He said “I am a very patriotic Pakistani. I will never do anything to harm my team or country. This is my team, I am all for them. We are going to try to make our people proud of us. We are going to try to do the best things we can do with our knowledge and experience.”
Recently, Waqar and skipper Misbah-ul-Haq had to face a lot of criticism from former players over not playing Sarfraz in the first four matches of the ongoing World Cup.
Sarfraz only got an opportunity against South Africa on Sunday and he displayed his talent by scoring 49 as an opener and facilitated six catches behind the stumps to help Pakistan post a much-important win. Due to his outstanding feat he was chosen for the man-of-the-match award.
Waqar clarified, “Look I know this Sarfraz issue has been the talk of the town…why he has not been played and why he was not given the opportunity? It is very easy to sit in your lounge and think why they are not playing Sarfraz, but we are the people who have problems in hands, we are sorting out these issues and sometimes it becomes very difficult for us.”
Waqar, who reacted in a rather awkward manner just yesterday and had quit press conference, now seemingly appreciated him, adding, “Sarfraz no doubt is an asset to Pakistan cricket and he has proved it over the time. We had given him quite a few games before the World Cup as an opener and he looked totally out of sorts, as you have to understand he is not a genuine opener. He is a makeshift opener. We gave Nasir Jamshed a fair chance to do well in the World Cup as he is our specialist opener. But once he didn’t come good we had no choice but to look back at Sarfraz. He is one of those characters who likes to take challenges. I had a quiet word with him and he was very keen and positive to take this challenge against South Africa and he did well”.
Waqar also justified the criticism back home and said, “This is nothing new. We are very used to these sort of things. It is a very emotional time for the entire country. I guess everyone can’t be happy on certain decisions. But people who understand the game will certainly appreciate what we are trying to do to get the best out of this team.”
However, avoiding predicting anything on long term basis, he concluded, “The last week has been good for us. I am hopeful for good things to come but I don’t want to look to far ahead. The main thing after beating South Africa, which was a big win, we are quietly confident and we have started to get our self belief back in the dressing room.”
