World T20 2016: Maharashtra Government urge BCCI to keep Pakistan away from the state
Maharashtra Government said no to BCCI’s proposal to host Pakistan match in the state during the World T20 2016. Pakistan will not have any match of World T20 2016 in Mumbai keeping in the security situation in Maharashtra. BCCI mandarins have taken this decision in cosultation with Maharashtra government, Indian Express journalist Devendra Pandey reported.
Maharashtra goverement feared that right wing political parties like Shiv Seana might creat problem to host Pakistan in the state. The report quoted a top BCCI official who said, “BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur spoke to government bodies in Maharashtra and they have advised us to not have any Pakistan games as political parties might create some protest and there could be law and order situation in the state. We don’t know what the situation will be between both countries by next year but we don’t want to take any risk.”
Shiv Sena, which one destroyed Wankhede pitch in the night before Pakistan match in 90’s, had in recent past opposed the participation of Pakistan players in professional Kabbadi and hockey league held in Maharashtra.
Shiv Sena which is ally of BJP in central govenment and Anurag Thakur being a BJP MP does not want to create any hiccup which may cause political upheavel. Along with that, board’s global repuation is stake, so Anurga Thakur agreed to the suggestion of BJP lead Maharshtra government.
The report also quoted a reliable source who told that India and Pakistan may feature in the same group along with West Indies.It also said that India may play Pakistan either in Chennai or Mohali. World Cricket’s governing body is yet to come up with the final draw for the multilateral tournament.
“We will ensure that such a draw is been made that Pakistan team will not have to play any games in two venues in (Wankhede and VCA) Maharashtra. As the final will be held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, there will be no problem in Bengal,” source said Indian Express.
Maharashtra has two Test centres —Vidarbha Cricket Association in Nagpur and MCA (Wankhede Stadium) which have been picked to host ICC T20 World Cup to take place in India next year. The other venues are Kolkata, Dharamsala, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi and Mohali.
Recently, the venues for World T20 2016 has revealed in which Maharashtra has two Test centres -Vidarbha Cricket Association in Nagpur and MCA (Wankhede Stadium) . The other venues of the tournament are Kolkata, Dharamsala, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi and Mohali.
