During the match against England in the Super Eight stage of the ICC World T20 2007 at Durban, the former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh created history by hitting six sixes in an over of England pacer Stuart Broad. Many people, who watched that game, know that Yuvraj had a serious vocal fight with the English all-rounder Andrew Flintoff just before the beginning of Broad’s nightmare over. Recently, Yuvraj revealed what Flintoff said to him that led him to go for the extraordinary thing.
It was a crucial match for the Indian team which they won by 18 runs (India – 218/4; England – 200/6). Yuvraj Singh came to bat in the 17th over, he slammed six sixes to Stuart Broad in the 19th over and recorded the fastest T20 half-century (12-ball-fifty).
Before the 19th over, Yuvraj hit two consecutive fours to Andrew Flintoff. After completing that 18th over of that innings, Flintoff tried to irritate Yuvraj by calling both the boundaries came with ridiculous shots.
Yuvraj recalled the memory and told Sports Tak, “To be honest it was not on my mind to hit 5 sixes. But my argument will Flintoff got me infuriated.
“I hat hit Flintoff for 2 boundaries on good deliveries and he did not like it. And after that over when I was walking to the other end. I can’t repeat exactly what he said. He told me that those were some ridiculous shots. So I asked him what did he say and had a confrontation.”
I will cut your throat off: Andrew Flintoff said Yuvraj Singh
Then, Flintoff went one step ahead and said that he would cut his throat off. Yuvraj went angry on that and replied to hit him with the bat.
Flintoff said, “I will cut your throat off.
Yuvraj replied, “You see this bat in my hand. You know where I am gonna hit you with this bat?
The skipper MS Dhoni was in the non-striker-end at that moment. Dhoni and umpires interrupted angry Yuvraj and then everyone knew the unlucky fate of Broad.
Yuvraj said, “So the umpire interrupted us but I was very pumped after that argument and I had decided that I have to send every ball out of the park now. Luckily it was my day.”
In the 19th over, Yuvraj hit the sixes over the cow corner, backward square leg, extra cover, backward point (against a full toss), mid-wicket and wide mid-on respectively. Yuvraj revealed that he had even never hit a boundary in the point region before that game where he smashed the fourth six in the 19th over.
Yuvraj claimed, “Today when I see those sixes, I wonder how I did I hit the first shot. The 2nd and 3rd were good shots. But the 4th one was in the point region. Before that day, I had never even hit a boundary in point.”
