Want to be a professional cricketer?
Chris Gayle was named as the greatest T20 batsman after the cricket fraternity witnessed his eyeball-popping strokeplay in the IPL 2013. The former Royal Challengers’ Bangalore player was an onslaught against the Pune Warrior when he registered the highest-ever IPL score, unbeaten 175. Luke Wright, who was playing in the game for Pune Warriors, reminisced Gayle’s attack.
During his unbeaten 175, the left-arm spinner Yuvraj Singh had sustained shoulder injury because of which he didn’t bowl. So, the Warrior captain Aaron Finch decided to bowl an over himself which proved to be the costliest over. In his over, the giant Chris struck four sixes and one boundary in Finch’s over.
Chris Gayle slammed unbeaten 175:
Recounting the event in the recent interaction, Wright said that Yuvraj was lucky enough to escape Gayle’s attack. He also said that the former Indian cricketer was smiling after seeing Finch being beaten by the tall man’s attack.
“Going back to that 175*, I think it was Aaron Finch bowling left-arm straights basically,” said Wright.
“Yuvraj seemed to have a bit of a sore shoulder that day so Finchy had to bowl. I just remember him [Yuvraj] smiling, I think he even laughed when Finchy came on and poor Finchy went absolutely miles.”
After seven years also, no cricket fans have forgotten Gayle’s 175 runs knock. Interestingly, he didn’t get much support from his non-striker end as Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers lost their wickets early. RCB set the mammoth target of 264 runs which could not be chased down by Aaron Finch led Pune Warriors. With one wicket in hand, they could only score 133 runs. And this innings became immortal in the IPL’s history.
