Sarfaraz Ahmed should focus on his form – Zaheer Abbas
Abbas isn’t the only former great to call for big changes in the team as former pace spearhead Shoaib Akhtar had called for Sarfaraz Ahmed to step down as captain. Akhtar also gave his opinion into who should take up the role after Sarfaraz.
“As far as Sarfaraz Ahmed’s captaincy is concerned, I think he must relinquish either the Test captaincy or ODI and T20 captaincy to focus on his own form. It will help ease the pressure on Sarfaraz, the team and the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board),” Zaheer Abbas was quoted as saying in The Nation.
Pakistan must have a vice-captain:
Further, he also went on to add saying that the board should name the regular vice-captain of the team. Zaheer Abbas believes that this is the right time to bring heavy changes to Pakistan Cricket
“Pakistan needs to appoint a full-time vice-captain keep in mind its long-term future. The vice-captain must be groomed for [captaining in the future]. Test cricket is a very important aspect of the game. We need to focus on producing top-class players for the longer format of the game. It is high time the PCB introduce revolutionary steps and implement a new domestic structure,” he added.
However, no Pakistan captain ever, not even the great Imran Khan, has won more than one major ICC trophy except for Sarfaraz. After winning Under-19 World Cup in 2006, Eleven years later, the seniors clinched the ICC Champions Trophy under his captaincy.
