Zaheer Khan in contention to become Team India’s bowling coach: Reports

Reports of former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan being in contention for Team India’s bowling coach is doing the rounds. Newly-appointed Team India head coach Anil Kumble is reportedly looking out for an experienced Indian bowler to take charge of the bowling department and lead the young Indian bowlers and Zaheer Khan looks suitable for the job. Zaheer’s leadership skills were in full display during this year’s IPL when he led a young Delhi side from the front.

Earlier, former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, who is one the members of the Cricket Advisory Committee, which selected Kumble as Indian coach, said that the decision to appoint the assistant coaches depends entirely on the BCCI.

“I have no knowledge about the availability of Zaheer as the likely candidate. It is up to the BCCI to decide on the final name and the fact if Zaheer will be available all throughout the year,” Ganguly was reported as saying.

“It is Anil’s prerogative. Since he is a bowler, maybe, he did not appoint a bowling coach. I also have read in the newspapers that he may rope in pace bowling coach later. Let me stress that Sachin and Laxman have no role in appointing Anil’s assistant coaches,” Ganguly added.

One of the greatest pacers of India, Zaheer played 92 Test and 200 ODI matches, taking 311 and 282 wickets respectively in an illustrious career.

Ganguly had also revealed that BCCI offered the role of batting coach to former Team India director Ravi Shastri.

Meanwhile, the Indian team is currently in West Indies to play a four-Test series.
