The 2022 FIFA World Cup began on a poor note for Qatar as the hosts suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Ecuador. Playing their first-ever World Cup, Qatar proved no match for their South American counterpart as the latter registered a convincing win to began their campaign.
The lack of experience for Qatar was clearly visible as they hardly caused any trouble for Ecuador. The loss also meant that Qatar became the first-ever host nation to lose the opening match of a World Cup. They could not muster a single shot on target throughout the game.
Ecuador dominated the proceedings right from the start and deservedly walked away with a convincing win. Enner Valencia scored both the goals for his team in the first half to put the game beyond the hosts’ reach. The first goal came from spot-kick after Qatar’s erratic goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb brought the Ecuador captain down in the box. The former West Ham United man then came up with a brilliant header to silence the Al Bayt Stadium.

While Qatar and Ecuador were busy on the field, one Ecuador fan decided to have some action in the stands. In a very bold move, he decided to taunt the Qatari fans while being surrounded by them. In a viral clip, the man could be seen shouting ‘money’ while making gestures with his hand.
Fortunately for him, there was no violent retaliation from the opposition fans and one of the Qatari fan just shouted at him and asked him to sit down. The incident reportedly took place in the early stage of the match when Ecuador’s goal was ruled out for off-side. Disappointed with the call, the fan decided to vent his frustration and perhaps went a bit too far.
