2018 FIFA World Cup: Cristiano Ronaldo Breaks Plethora Of Records With Stunning Hat-trick Against Spain
All the talks regarding his reported desire to leave Real Madrid this year, the tax controversy and other topics took the back seat as Cristiano Ronaldo once again mesmerised the world with his dazzling footballing display. The Portugal skipper led from the front, scoring a stunning hat-trick to help his team earn a thrilling draw against Spain in their World Cup-opener on Friday. It was Ronaldo’s 51st career hat-trick but first in the World Cup.
Spain were seemingly heading towards victory after coming from behind twice to lead 3-2 with just minutes remaining. However, Ronaldo denied them right at the death with a stunning free-kick. The reigning Ballon D’Or holderopened his Russia 2018 account from the penalty spot in the fourth minute. 20 minutes later, Diego Costa fired Spain level.
Ronaldo then scored his second just before the break after David de Gea made a meal of a regulation save. But within 13 minutes after the restart, Spain scored twice to take the lead. Costa scored in the 55th minute to level Spain again before Nacho’s thunderbolt gave his side the lead three minutes later.
It looked like game over for Portugal until Ronaldo once again grabbed all the headlines. With time running out, Spain conceded a free-kick in a dangerous position when Gerard Pique fouled Ronaldo twenty-five yards out from goal. The onus was on Ronaldo to level the scoreboard and he did it with utmost aplomb. The 33-year old beat de Gea with a sublime lofted finish into the top corner of the goal.
The three goals helped Ronaldo made quite a few records on a remarkable night in Sochi.
His first goal saw him become just the fourth man in history to score goals at four different World Cup finals.
It also saw Ronaldo become the first man in international history to score goals in eight consecutive major tournaments.
He also became the oldest player to score a World Cup hat-trick.

Not only that, Ronaldo also became the first player to score a World Cup hat-trick against Spain. He has now scored 84 goals in 151 international appearances for Portugal.
Portugal now face Morocco in Group B on Wednesday in Moscow while Spain face Iran also on Wednesday.
