2018 FIFA World Cup, Match 12: Sweden vs South Korea – Match Preview
Sweden and South Korea will open their World Cup campaign when they take on each other on Monday.
With Germany and Mexico being the other two teams in Group F, this game holds a lot of importance for both the teams. While a win will surely boost the winner’s hopes of advancing, the losing team can very much fall out of contention. But advancing to the next stage would be a herculean task for both the teams as neither side comes into the tournament in encouraging form.
Sweden, who are without the internationally-retired Zlatan Ibrahimovic, failed to score in their last three warm-up matches. The European outfit has not won a game since beating Italy in the first leg of their play-off qualifier last November.
On the other hand, South Korea lost to Senegal and Bosnia and Herzegovina in friendlies. They have also been hit hard by injuries. Experienced attacker Lee Keun-ho, midfielder Kwon Chang-hoon and defender Kim Jin-su failed to make the squad due to respective problems.
Sportzwiki brings you all you need to know ahead of the clash between the two sides.
Venue and time:
Sweden and South Korea will lock horns in Nizhny Novgorod. The action will begin at 5:30 PM IST.
Players to look out for:
For South Korea, the player to watch out for is Heung-Min Son. The Tottenham forward scored 18 goals in all competitions last season and South Korea will be hoping he can deliver as they prepare for their ninth successive World Cup.
Sweden, on the other hand, will be pinning their hopes on Victor Lindelof to inspire the side. The 23-year-old defender did not have the best of seasons for Manchester United, playing just 17 Premier League games in 2017/18. And he will be keen to prove himself in the biggest competition of the game.
