Sheffield Wednesday have signed Everton’s Aiden McGeady on loan for the rest of the season.
The 29-year-old Republic of Ireland international McGeady has played just one match for Everton this season and is desperate for regular first-team football ahead of Euro 2016.
However, Everton had earlier agreed terms for a similar contract with another Sky Bet Championship club, believed to be Blackburn, whereas Leeds were also linked with the player.
McGeady started his career at Celtic and went on to win four Scottish Premier League titles, two Scottish FA Cups and two Scottish League Cups during his six years spell at the club.
In 2010 Spartak Moscow signed McGeady from Celtic and after netting 13 goals in 93 appearances for the Russian club he eventually returned to the UK and signed for Everton for an undisclosed fee in 2014 Jnuary transfer window.
McGeady has 76 international caps for the Republic of Ireland since making his debut in July 2004 against Jamaica.
The winger has decided to join Wednesday on a temporary deal as the Championship side continuing their fight for promotion to the Premier League.
“Aiden McGeady has joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan until the end of the season,” an Everton statement confirmed on Monday.
“The winger joins the Championship side, who are vying for promotion to the Premier League, after featuring just once for the Blues in the first half of the 2015-16 campaign.”
Martinez wants to bring back McGeady into the Everton team next season only if the player is given a consistent first-team chance in Wednesday’s team.
“Aiden needs to play and it’s a really good opportunity for him to do that in a very demanding fixture list for a team that can get a really good tempo into Aiden for the Euros,” he said.
“That will make sure he comes back having had a good period of football and of having an impact.”
Meanwhile Everton are close enough to sign Lokomotiv Moscow striker Oumar Niasse as he arrived at Merseyside for Medical.
It is believed, the Toffees £13.5million bid was accepted for the 25-year-old Senegalese attacker and he is right now at the club’s Finch Farm training ground discussing personal terms.
Niasse has scored 12 goals in 21 appearances this season and would be signed as a replacement for Steven Naismith, who was earlier sold to Norwich for £8.5m.Niasse is possibly be the only player arriving before the transfer window closes.
