In another blow to Chelsea, RB Leipzig have rejected their proposal to negotiate a swap deal between wantaway striker Timo Werner and defender Josko Gvardiol. Sport1 chief reporter Patrick Berger has reported that the Bundesliga side are reluctant on letting their highly-rated center-back leave for Stamford Bridge.
The Croat has become a crucial part of Leipzig’s backline since joining them from Dinamo Zagreb last summer for £17 million. The defender made 44 appearances for the club across all competitions last season, scoring 2 goals and providing 3 assists, also helping them to DFB Pokal cup glory.
On the other hand, Timo Werner has reportedly grown frustrated over lack of game time at Chelsea, and his recent bust-up with manager Thomas Tuchel has forced him to seek an exit. The striker’s time at Stamford Bridge has unfortunately been a flop show as he has managed a mere 23 goals in 89 games so far.
‘Unsaleable this summer’- claims Berger over Chelsea’s Josko Gvardiol pursuit
Chelsea have Josko Gvardiol on their books since a long time after monitoring him throughout the last season. Thomas Tuchel is a massive admirer of the 20-year-old center-back and feels he could bring a lot to his crippled backline. The Blues have lost defenders Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen this summer, and have since brought in only one replacement in Kalidou Koulibaly.
Tuchel has demanded more reinforcements in defense after further missing out on Jules Kounde despite agreeing a £55m deal with Sevilla. It seems they are set to miss out on Gvardiol as well after Leipzig have dismissed the talks of sending him to Stamford Bridge.
As much as Leipzig have shown interest in taking their former striker, they are however unwilling to let Gvardiol go the other way in a straight swap. Berger has further claimed that while Leipzig might end up with Werner at the end of the market, Chelsea won’t be able to welcome Josko Gvardiol.
The journalist tweeted, “Timo Werner wants to leave Chelsea, as reported in March. Leipzig pushing to sign him. There was a meeting between the clubs few days ago. Werner is keen to join his former club and set for a huge salary cut. A swap deal with Josko Gvardiol is no topic.”
Berger was also asked whether Leipzig would entertain a separate offer for Gvardiol to which he replied, “No. Unsaleable this summer! 🚫”. This would may come as big blow for Chelsea who are unable to replenish their backline. Meanwhile, Timo Werner may successfully depart Chelsea whether or not Leipzig let Gvardiol leave.
The striker has attracted attention from Italian giants Juventus as well, who are in search of a striker. The German would be happy to join either of his former side or Juventus given he gets regular minutes. Meanwhile, Chelsea need to find alternatives to Gvardiol with their Premier League opener against Everton fast approaching.
