Manchester United have suffered a major setback ahead of the big game against Liverpool as captain Wayne Rooney is doubtful for the North-West Derby.
The England captain was not with the rest of Louis van Gaal’s squad when they checked into the team hotel on Friday and it is reported that he has sustained a hamstring injury.
Rooney felt a tightness in the back of the leg during the last training session of Manchester United and it is thought that he might miss the huge game as his absence in the squad which arrived for their overnight stay at the Lowry Hotel in Salford made media speculate.
Manchester United officially did not confirm any news on the injury, but English media suggests that Rooney will undergo a final fitness test ahead of the game which takes place today evening at 5:30.
There are reports that Rooney might also miss Manchester United’s Champions League group stage game against PSV Eindhoven.
Louis van Gaal will have a major decision to make if Rooney misses the game. New signing from AS Monaco, Anthony Martial who signed for a record fee for a teenager, might make his debut in the huge match but it will be too soon to push him right away into the first team considering his age and he is coming to England for the first time.
Memphis Depay can play as a center forward and the other option is Marouane Fellaini who is tipped to play as a striker by van Gaal few days ago.
Rooney’s miss will be a huge blow for Manchester United especially on such a big game in their hands.
Michael Carrick is already out of the game due to an injury and now Rooney’s injury will add even more headache for van Gaal.
