Manchester United’s Frenkie de Jong pursuit could really come to an end after fellow rivals Chelsea have approached FC Barcelona for the midfielder. De Jong has been stalling from putting pen to paper on a £63 million deal agreed between United and Barcelona for his transfer. Taking advantage of the same, Chelsea have now jumped the line to acquire the Dutchman.

According to highly reliable journalist David Ornstein, Chelsea have already opened talks with the Catalan club for De Jong’s transfer. The Blues want to conduct plenty of business before the summer window shuts after so far landing only two signings in Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly.

‘Hope to strike deal’ claims Ornstein of Chelsea’s Frenkie de Jong chase

Frenkie de Jong has holding up from leaving the Catalan club since he wants to continue to play in the Champions League which United cannot offer. Furthermore, the midfielder is also owed £17 million in wages by his current employers, resulting in another reason for him to reject an exit.

However, Chelsea still fancy their chances as De Jong himself has reportedly showed his willingness to moving to a ‘Champions League club’. Though considered a tough operation, Chelsea owner Todd Boehly’s meeting with Barca president Joan Laporta last month could prove crucial. The two men discussed a ‘few players’ which also included the name of Frenkie de Jong.

Further on, Ornstein claims Chelsea are moving rapidly to close in a £50 million deal for Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella. The Blues have pipped Manchester City to progress with agreeing a deal for Cucurella, after including their own talented center-back Levi Colwill in the negotiations.

Ornstein wrote on Twitter, “Chelsea have offered Brighton £50m+ for Marc Cucurella. Not yet done as #BHAFC seek higher fee & replacement: Colwill top target. Cucurella personal terms agreed. #CFC also in talks with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong + hope to strike deal.”

According to multiple reports, Thomas Tuchel highly rates De Jong who he feels would bring much needed dynamism to his ageing midfield. Both N’Golo Kante and Jorginho are in their 30s and having De Jong who is 25 now could solve Chelsea’s future problems in that midfield position.

On the other hand, United look set to lose out on another massive player due to their failure to make it to the Champions League. Cristiano Ronaldo too has handed in a transfer request at the club in order to remain a part of the European competition of which he is the all-time top scorer.

Nonetheless, Frenkie de Jong to Chelsea won’t be a cakewalk for both the sides, especially what happened with the deal of Raphinha and Jules Kounde. However, Barca feel this is the right time to repair their relationship with Chelsea since they are looking to snap up Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso from the Blues.
