Arsenal Legend Backs Ibrahimovic To Rediscover His Goal-Scoring Way Of Life

The much lauded arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Manchester United during the summer seems like a long time ago now as the veteran Swede has struggled under the ever evolving team management of Jose Mourinho.

Enduring one of the worst goal-scoring droughts of his illustrious career, the 35-year-old has now gone six games since he last found the back of the net. Not since 2007, when with Inter Milan, has Ibrahimovic had to content with such a barren spell in front of goal.

For a man used to scoring on average, every other game, his first three months at Old Trafford have been a challenge. Having started his United career with a goal inside four minutes, Ibrahimovic looked set for greatness as goals continued to follow, with four goals in as many games.

However, with only one goal in his last ten games, it seems the team woes so far this term are reflected by the man so normally prolific when it comes to getting on the score sheet.

Following his embarrassing injury time miss against Burnley at the weekend, Ibrahimovic, along with Mourinho and his stuttering United, find themselves at the sharp end of fan ridicule. After ten games of the Premier League season, Mourinho’s men sit eighth in the table on 15 points. At this point in the season, even the much maligned David Moyes had fared batter, with 17 points.

So what now for Ibrahimovic? At 35, is he a spent force? Has the notoriously difficult Premier League exposed frailties that France’s Ligue 1 did not reveal?

As the critics circle like vultures, one man has stepped up and offered his support for the ageing striker. According to Arsenal legend and all round goal scoring genius, Thierry Henry, Ibrahimovic has the character and ability to recover from his drought in front of goal.

The Sky Sports pundit, who played alongside the Swede at Barcelona, spoke in support of the striker while appearing on Monday Night Football,

“All the questions have been about Jose Mourinho and Wayne Rooney but now they are about Zlatan Ibrahimovic.”

“It’s the first time he’s found himself in this situation in his career. He usually puts them in the back of the net because this doesn’t happen to him often.”

“He’s going to have to deal with it. I know he has the character and the ability to deal with it but it will be better for him if it happens sooner rather than later.”

Henry added that with United currently struggling for form, they need their big names like Ibrahimovic to deliver.

“Sometimes it’s okay if you don’t score but your team still wins but he knows he’s had great opportunities to score goals in important games.”

“Yes, it does affect you but I would still back him to deliver for United because of the player he was and he is still,” he added.”

“It hasn’t happened for him recently for United, but he needs to find a way to score goals because they need that.

“Does it affect him? Yes, he’s a human being but he has the right tools in his mind to recover from that.”

With United currently lying a whopping eight points behind the league leaders, United need to find a way to win, and quickly. Failure to do so could well see the legendary striker’s time at Old Trafford come to an end after only one season.
