Arsenal ready to make a shock move for inform EPL striker
Arsene Wenger is preparing a shock £20 million move for Watford captain Troy Deeney.
The Gunners boss has long been a big fan of the powerhouse striker, who is enjoying an impressive run of goal-scoring form with six strikes in 11 matches this season.
According to Daily Star, Wenger is well aware that Watford will definitely not sell their skipper, or fellow striker Odion Ighalo, who also has been a surprise package of Premier League this term with 14 goals in 20 appearances.
Wenger stepped into the January transfer market for a genuine goal-scorer as he believes adding a ready-made striker to his current squad might be key to the Gunners mission to win their first title for 12 years.
Arsenal are right now sitting at the top of the table, leading fellow title contender Manchester City by two points, and Wenger has confirmed recently he is looking to sign two players this month.
Signing a striker was not thought to be an agenda for the Gunners earlier but Wenger now wants to sign a striker for the vacant number 9 jersey. Not only that, he also wants to keep some pressure of Giroud upfront in the absence of Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean attacker will return to action in the mid-January.
It is understood that Basel midfielder Mohamed Elneny is the first of those two players and reports are coming he is all set to fly in today to complete his £7m signing.
If Elnenny makes a move to Arsenal, Wenger will use him as Francis Coquelin’s replacement until the Frenchman returns from injury. But it will be interesting to see when Coquelin returns how the battle for the first team shirt will continue between these two players.
However, the 23-year-old Basel star is likely to be eased into action, he hasn’t played since 10th December due to the winter break in Switzerland.
On the other hand, Deeney himself few days ago admitted it would be financial disaster for Watford to sell Ighalo in January transfer window.
“The value of selling Odion for, what would he be worth? £20m, £25m?” he said.
“Or staying up and getting £200m? Simple business maths, he’s not going to sell him.”
The 27-year-old Watford skipper penned a new five-year deal in the summer, but as every transfer window gives so much opportunity to splash out huge money Wenger could try to lure Watford with a bid worth £20m.
