Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted that he made a mistake by not using Alexis Sanchez up front as the Chilean is in devastating form in front of goal this season.
Sanchez who played as a winger for the Gunners till last season was asked to play as a centre-forward this season by Wenger and he has managed an unbelievable 11 goals in 14 Premier League games so far.
The 27-year old has led the Arsenal attack from the front as he has been their most prolific scorer and chance creator this season alongside Mesut Ozil and the club has only lost twice since the start of the season across all competitions.
Wenger has earlier tried playing Sanchez as a central striker during the 2014-15 season against Everton but with the attempt failing, the French tactician did not try it until this season. However, the move proved to be a masterstroke as Arsenal have looked at their best in terms of consistency in the past decade as they have continued to impress in Premier League and Champions League.
‘When you see the guy who plays wide and can score goals, he can play in the centre and score even more,’ Wenger said.
‘I always saw that in Sanchez and I must honestly say I thought many times when I played him last year or two years ago I was wrong.
‘Because the few experiences I attempted with him through the middle were not convincing and I even remember at Everton I changed it at half-time.
‘This year it clicked very early in the season. I had to persuade Thierry (Henry) to switch role and Sanchez was happy out wide because in his head he was a wide player. He accepted it very well.’
Alexis Sanchez has so far scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists in 20 appearances for Gunners across all competitions and have looked the best player in the league so far.
