Barcelona fans have abused their midfielder Frenkie de Jong who is unwilling to take a pay-cut, as can be seen in a video released by Diario SPORT. The 25-year-old was leaving the club’s training facility when the fans gathered there hurled abuses at their player. De Jong has been reluctant in moving on from his ‘dream’ club, who on the other hand want to sell him.
The Catalans are deep in troubles with their financial situation which is keeping them from registering their five signings of this summer. They need to significantly cut down their wage bill and have marked Frenkie de Jong, one of the highest earners as the player t0 start with. However, they already owe him €20 million in wages from last season, and on top of that are asking him to take another pay-cut.
Barcelona offer Frenkie de Jong ‘three options’ to choose from
The Holland international has put Barca in a fix since he has opted against both, taking pay-cut or leaving the club. The Catalans had agreed a whopping €85 million deal with Manchester United for Frenkie’s transfer only for the player to reject the offer outright. De Jong wants to stay at the club and succeed under new manager Xavi.
He had further extended his contract until the summer of 2026 with altered terms during the pandemic. The new agreement reportedly meant that he agrees to differ his wages for the 2021/22 season, with the club promising to increase the same by the next season. However, Barca are now backtracking on their agreement which has disappointed the player.
While both Xavi and club president Joan Laporta consider him as an important part of their project and are willing to keep him, they want Frenkie to take a step forward as well by agreeing to a salary-reduction. Otherwise, the club feels De Jong should leave since United, and now Chelsea are ready to shell out in the excess of €85 million for him.
This would help the club with some cash-injection and clear massive wages off their bill. But given the player is agreeing to neither, they are still unable to register their new players which include the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha. As a result, the club’s fans let their anger out at Frenkie de Jong, shouting at him the chants of “Lower your salary, p****!”.

In their last attempt to force the midfielder into, Barcelona have threatened legal action against him on the grounds that the contract extension he signed during the previous board’s reign is ‘illegal’. Barcelona have reportedly revealed to De Jong that they have found ‘criminalities’ in his contract, along with some other players as well and they could trouble themselves with legal action.
The Frenkie de Jong transfer-saga has taken quite a toll now with ‘legal action’ now ready to enter the arena. Barcelona sought to clear out the situation before the transfer window closes in order to register their new signings, as well as contract renewals.
