Barcelona are eying a deal for Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot, according to Fichajes. The Catalans were on the hunt of a new right-back after their American international Sergino Dest left on loan for AC Milan. While they managed to land Hector Bellerin on the deadline day, the La Masia graduate remains their only option in that position. As a result, Barca manager Xavi has asked the club to sign one more right-back to reinforce the flank.

A deal for Dalot however could be complicated since the Portuguese is enjoying his life under new boss Erik ten Hag. United had acquired Dalot from Porto back in 2018, paying a sum of £20 million for his signing. However, the 23-year-old had to endure on a season long loan during the 2020/21 campaign to AC Milan, after failing to establish his place in the United starting eleven. But it seems Dalot is back to his best and cemented his place in that position under Ten Hag.

Barcelona plotting a free transfer for the right-back next summer

Barcelona’s problems with right-back department are not new since they have failed to replace their legendary player in that position Dani Alves. So much that the Brazilian was snapped up by the Catalans for free during last season’s winter market on a six-month deal. However, Alves has left for the second time and Barca are reeling once again with their right-back position.

Xavi is currently having to make do with another of the club’s signing from this summer Jules Kounde as a makeshift right-back, given the availability of Bellerin as the only other option. The La Liga giants hence want Dalot to address their right-back problems. Dalot has hit the ground running under Ten Hag, delivering robust performances every time he has taken the field. The 23-year-old has started all of United’s 8 games so far this season, which are a testimony to how important he is to Ten Hag.

The Portugal international is a relentless presser, which fits him in the system of the Dutchman. Moreover, despite having the £50 million right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka in his ranks, Ten Hag has only opted for Dalot who has also chipped in with 2 assists so far. United as a result, are unwilling to put Dalot on the market as they now consider him a crucial part of their project for the present as well as the future.

Since the start of the last season, Dalot has managed 30 outings in the Premier League so far racking up 2.3 tackles, 1.3 aerial duels won, 1.2 interceptions, 1.7 shot-creating actions, and a staggering 9.6 presses per game. No surprise Barca manager Xavi wants Dalot added to his roster next summer. While all his exploits are commendable, the right-back’s current deal at Old Trafford expires at the end of this season.

Barcelona are monitoring the situation as they are plotting a free transfer for Dalot next summer. On the other hand, their failed approach for Villarreal’s Juan Foyth this summer has accelerated their pursuit of the Man United right-back. But the Red Devils too won’t let Dalot slip out of their hands given his form, and will soon try to extend his contract at the club.
