Riding on a Lucas Perez hat-trick, Arsenal finally finished top of Champions League Group A after thrashing Basel 4-1 as Paris St-Germain’s could only play a 2-2 draw with Ludogorets Razgrad.
The French champions needed a victory to finish as the group winners while Arsenal’s fate was depending on the outcome of PSG’s match and the English giants should consider themselves lucky for the shocking result in Paris.
Arsene Wenger’s men opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Lucas Perez found the back of the net from close range. Eight minutes later, the Spaniard double his and his team’s tally when he tapped home the rebound after Kieran Gibbs’ strike was saved by the Basel goalkeeper.
His first hat-trick in Arsenal shirt came just after the break when he fired past the goalie from the edge of the box in the 47th minute. Alex Iwobi capped off the fine night for his team when he slotted home from close range before Basel found a consolation goal through Seydou Doumbia.
The Gunners have topped their group for the first time since 2011-12 and have also gone through a group stage unbeaten for the first time since they reached the final in 2005-06.

In 47 minutes, Lucas Perez has scored the same number of goals as Spurs have scored in their entire Champions League campaign this season.
