FC Basel made a cheeky swipe at English clubs in the Instagaram, after they qualified for the knockout stage at the expense of Liverpool. However, the cartoon was deleted after sometime.
When the Swiss club arrived at Anfield few days back, they only required a draw from their last group match to qualify for the knock out stages.
Fabian Frei put themselves in the driving seat by opening the scoring in the first half. Markovic’s sending off in the second half made their job easier. Perhaps too easy, as Basel got complacent and allowed 10-man Liverpool get back into the game.
Steven Gerrard scored a stunning freekick to give hope for the Merseyside outfit. However, good work from Basel goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik in the end saw the Swiss side hold out for a draw to qualify for the knock out stages.
Buoyed by the result, Basel posted a cartoon in their clubs official Instagram page mocking the English clubs. In the image, a Chelsea player and Tottenham Hotspur player were seen carrying a Liverpool player with the sign ‘You will never walk alone’ to imitate Liverpool.
Also in the back of the teams jersey, the year in which the respective clubs were beaten by Basel was present. Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur had 2013, while Liverpool had 2014 in the back of their jersey.
Last season in the group stage, Basel shocked the world to beat Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. They also beat Andre Villas Boas Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter finals of Europa League in 2013. After the match finished 4-4 in aggregate, Basel beat Spurs in the penalty shootout.
However, the image which was posted on Basel’s official Instagram page — fcbasel1893_offiziell – was subsequently removed by the club.
Moreover in 2011, Basel also beat Manchester United in the last match of the group stage to knock the Red Devils out of the competition. After drawing the return match at Old Trafford, Basel caused a major upset by beating Manchester United 2-1 at Switzerland to qualify for the knock out stage.
