Borussia Dortmund’s new signing Axel Witsel has revealed that Bayern Munich wanted him during the days of Carlo Ancelotti in 2017.
Axel Witsel had joined Borrusia Dortmund from Chinese Super League in the 2018 summer transfer window.
Axel Witsel joined Dortmund in the 2018 summer transfer window from the Chinese Super League. There he represented Tianjin Quanjian, but after an impressive run in the FIFA World Cup 2018 for Belgium, Witsel had earned a call-up from the German club.
However, Witsel could have played for the Bundesliga Champions Bayern Munich in 2017. Ancelotti wanted the Belgian, but it couldn’t happen in the end, as Tianjin Quanjian had no intentions to sell him. The Belgium midfielder told Bild,
“They did not call me but my former coach Fabio Cannavaro, and he then kindly and politely told Ancelotti that it was not possible.”
The 29-year old had made six appearances for Belgium, as the Red Devils secured a third-place finish in Russia.
Axel Witsel believes after a rusty break he is raring to go for his new club Dortmund.
“I feel good, I have been training intensively during my holidays, and I have been resting for three weeks, but that is not for me. Of course, I’ll need one or two games before hoping to be 100 percent.”
According to the potential of Witsel, his career took a strange turn. He came up through the youth ranks at Standard Liège before signing for Benfica at 19. Then he was in Portugal for one season before he made big money move to Zenit Saint Petersburg.
He won the Russia league title once, and then he moved to Chinese League to play for Tianjin Quanjian. When it looked like his career is going to the wrong track, Dortmund’s call has given the 29-year old midfielder a hope to take his career on high once again.
