Big Boost: Three Man United stars return to training after injury lay offs
Anthony Martial and Morgan Schneiderlin were both involved in Manchester United’s training session on Wednesday ahead of the Europa League clash with Fenerbahce.
Forward Martial – who features in and midfielder Schneiderlin were missing from the matchday squad for Monday’s 0-0 Premier League draw at Liverpool after the pair suffered knocks in training on Saturday.
But they look to be in contention to return when United host Fenerbahce in Group A on Thursday having been seen taking part in Wednesday morning’s session at the Red Devils’ Aon Training Complex in Carrington, the first 15 minutes of which were open to the media.
Midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who has missed the last seven games due to a thigh problem, was also involved.
The only absentee from the session was defender Phil Jones (knee), plus goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who had been involved in an under-23s match the previous evening.
United come into this fixture after a goalless draw against Liverpool in the league at Anfield on 17 October. The Merseyside club dominated the possession but struggled to get past the Red Devils’ defense.
When Jurgen Klopp’s men managed to beat United’s defenders, Liverpool found it difficult to get past David de Gea. The former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper made two world class saves and made sure United kept a clean sheet.
Jose Mourinho’s side settled for a draw in the last two fixtures and that could be something the Portuguese tactician will be hoping to change when his side host the Turkish outfit in the Europa League clash tonight.
United are currently third in Group A and are at risk of exiting Europe’s secondary club competition early unless they improve.
In the previous European fixture, Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s goal was the difference as United sealed a 1-0 win over Zorya Luhansk. That was the Premier League club’s first win at the competitions as the first match against Feyenoord ended in a 1-0 defeat.
Fenerbahce defeated the Dutch club in the previous Europa League fixture after the first match against Zorya ended in a 1-1 draw. The clash will see former United striker Robin van Persie return to Old Trafford for the first time since leaving the club last summer.
