Big News: Manchester United’s €17m January Transfer Deal Almost Done
Exiled Manchester United forward Memphis Depay’s unhappy spell at Manchester United is reportedly on the brink of coming to an end.
Ligue 1 side Lyon have been in discussions with Man United throughout January with a view to signing the Dutch international, and the Guardian have reported that they are close to agreeing on a €17m (£14.7m) fee.
The Premier League side’s determination to rid themselves of the player will see them make a significant loss on the 22-year-old, whom they spent £25m on in the summer of 2015. Indeed, he could have been leaving for even less that that but Lyon’s opening bid of £13m was rejected last week.
Lyon manager Bruno Geneseo had made no secret of the fact that the former PSV player was his side’s primary target for this transfer window, and was confident of getting his man in the end.
However, the report goes on to state that nothing is rubber-stamped yet and that Man United could look for more money at the eleventh hour, but Memphis’s desire to leave combined with the fact that his manager José Mourinho has little use for him means that a deal should be reached soon and with little in the way of complication.
The news will come as a blow to Everton, who were hoping to reunite Memphis with fellow Old Trafford outcast Morgan Schneiderlin. With Yannick Bolasie’s season over and Gerard Deulofeu reportedly on his way to AC Milan, Ronald Koeman was looking to add to his options out wide but it seems that he will now have to look elsewhere.
After a miserable 18-month spell that yielded just 16 Premier League starts (none of which have come this season), a player that had shown so much promise will now have to prove himself all over again.
