Manchester United defender Daley Blind suggested that he is pretty comfortable playing as center back for the club right now. United manager Louis van Gaal had made Daley Blind a makeshift center back in the absence of several first team defenders. Daley Blind partenered Chris Smalling in several pre-season games. The Dutchman did a commendable job in protecting Manchester UNited’s goal and that tempted Van Gaal to field him in the same position when the Premier League new season began on Saturday.
As Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo have been sidelined due to injuries Blind played alongside Smalling against Tottenham Hotspur. Blind initially was looking a little uncomfortable as the Spurs imposed several threats on the defense. Christian Eriksen had come really close to score the first goal in the 4th minute. Blind was at fault as he did not mark Eriksen properly. But as the game progressed Blind’s performance improved.
Speaking about his performance and his new position Blind told MUTV, “I’ve said many times before that I just want to play. If you see what everyone can add to the team, then it’s a real battle for places and everyone had to fight for a position.
“I got a chance on this occasion and I tried my best. Of course, people always say I don’t have the height or the power but I think I’m clever enough and smart enough.”
Daley Blind was responsible for marking Tottenham star Harry Kane and he did a good job in keeping the English internation at bay for almost the entire game. Blind credited his success to his team mates and suggested that it was group effort and every other defender should be credited for the clean sheet.
The Dutch defender further added: “If you see our opponent today, he’s very good; he wins a lot of headers and duels in the striking position so it’s not only about power and force. I think we did well at the back, together with Chris, Luke [Shaw] and Matteo [Darmian] and we get a clean sheet so I was happy.”
Blind is an extremely versatile player and can play in any position. Predominantly a left back, he has played in several positions like wing-back, defensive midfielder and now as center back. Louis van Gaal used to utilise him as central defensive midfielder in several matches last season.
