Arsenal top defensive target and Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes has revealed that he has turned down a transfer to Emirates to remain with current club Schalke. The 27-year old has drawn attention of Wenger after his impressive performances in the past season and was heavily linked with the Gunners.
The German international is viewed as a potential successor to Per Mertesacker but Howedes thinks he has lot to offer to his current club whom he joined at the age of 14.
Howedes is one of the best centre backs in Bundesliga and can play as a full back if needed which will give any team – a lot of options. The player has made his debut for Schalke first team back in 2007 and has not looked back since.
The Blues have failed to secure Champions League spot next season after a miserable second half of the season and the player does not want to leave his home club in such a crisis situation.
“I am able to confirm that Arsenal and AC Milan have been really keen on my services. I wouldn’t say that I have chosen against them, but simply that I have decided in favour of Schalke.
“My job here is not yet done and after the disappointment of last season I do not want to leave this way. I am a key player of this club and I am staying.”
