In what will come as a grave news for Chelsea fans, one of their top transfer targets has now reportedly signed a huge contract extension with his current club.

The Stamford Bridge outfit are one of the many teams that spent big in the transfer window but are not really happy with their transfer business. They managed to get their hands on Marcos Alonso and David Luiz on deadline day but Antonio Conte, the manager of the club, is still not satisfied with the options he has at certain positions in the field.

He is a manager who wants his team to defend strongly but apart from Gary Cahill and John Terry, the manager has not been able to entrust any of his players with a defensive position unless required this season.

That is one of the reasons why Conte was desperate for Napoli center back Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Senegalese international joined the Italian outfit back in 2014 and has grown on to become one of the most consistent defenders in Europe in recent times.

He made 42 appearances for the side last season cementing a strong place in the starting XI and is one of the first names on paper for the Italian side even this season.

However, Stamford Bridge outfit Chelsea were desperate to add a defender to their ranks and Koulibaly was tipped off as their top priority transfer target.

Napoli quoted a price close to the £50m mark leaving Conte to look for cheaper options to add to his squad.

Reports also suggested that Conte was readying to meet the asking price but the deal fell through after it was revealed that Napoli are not yet ready to sell.

This saw Conte look at other alternatives as he finally settled on David Luiz come the deadline day.

Though he missed out on his signature, Conte was reportedly desperately keeping tabs on the 25-year old ahead of a move next summer but all such plans will now be ditched as it is understood that Koulibaly has signed a contract extension with Napoli.

According to reports, Koulibaly signed a new contract with Napoli that will keep him at the club till 2021 leaving no chance of a move next season.

He will cost record fees if he is to be price away and Chelsea will feel that they missed out on a top class player this summer.

They will now have to search elsewhere to improve their defense once the transfer window is open. Do you think Koulibaly should have moved to Chelsea this summer?
