The international break has not been kind to Arsenal in the past with some injuries even costing them the Premier League title in the last decade or so.
But one player who is happily taking a rest this break is German international Mesut Ozil
Joachim Low rested the Arsenal midfielder for his side’s qualifier in this break and the attacking midfielder is expected to be fit and ready to go on their trip to Old Trafford this weekend.
The 28-year old has been one of the outstanding players for the Gunners this season and has been one of the best players in the league this season.
Having made a big money move from Real Madrid back in 2013, the German midfielder has not been able to lift the club to the title but in current form, Ozil, may just be able to provide Arsenal with their best shot at the Premier League title in more than a decade.
He is in the middle of the best form of his life and is expected to play a huge role this season for Wenger who is now finally close to securing Ozil for the long term.
Ozil has just 18 months left on his contract and has been on the cusp of signing a new one since the start of the season. However, Wenger was not able to provide him with the perfect contract which has seen Ozil take his time before signing a deal.
However, reports today suggest that the 28-year old will sign a staggering new contract with the club in the upcoming days.
Ozil is currently on £140,000-a-week and according to the report, he will now earn £200,000-a-week on his new contract.
It is understood that the representatives of the player have been in deep discussions with the club and have asked for a pay rise that Wenger has finally accepted.
It is clear that Ozil wants to stay in London having recently bought a £10m in the city and might join Spanish full-back Hector Bellerin in signing a contract extension this season.
This contract will see Ozil turn into the most expensive player for the Gunners, (with his wages) but his quality and contributions to the squad are priceless.
Though the Gunners’ fans will be happy with the new, the same report also suggests that they are no closer to signing Sanchez to the long term.
The Chilean is currently out on international duty and is one of the most important player for club and country. Even he has just 18 months left on his contract but Wenger has not been able to persuade him to sign a new contract.
Sanchez has his own demands and Wenger will have to agree to them to keep him for the long term. But for now, they will be happy with Ozil’s situation.
Do you think Ozil is good enough to be Arsenal’s highest earner ever?
