Boost For Liverpool as Star Defender Rules Out AFCON Exit In January
The game of football has always seen fans and pundits argue about the importance of club football as such and over the importance of international football from over the years.
Though both formats have their own attractions, we have time and again seen top class players fight hard for their country even with a busy domestic schedule and the Premier League clubs will lose a few players to international duties after the turn of the year with the Africa Cup of Nations looming large.
There are a number of star players who will be busy with their nation squads at that time but one player who has snubbed his national team for his club is Liverpool summer transfer Joel Matip.
The former Bundesliga man is one of the most important players for the Cameroon national side, his birth country.
It is not a secret that the 25-year old has been ignoring calls from his national side for almost an year now as he is not really happy with the organization of the national team in Cameroon.
He has been in an exile for a long time now but recent reports have suggested that the central defender is pondering over getting back into the national setup for the AFCON.
According to the report, Matip was in conversation with Cameroon coach Hugo Broos over a comeback to the national squad and this news gave many Liverpool fans a frown on their face.
The former Schalke defender has been one of the best players for Liverpool this season.
With him in the team, Liverpool have conceded just 8 goals in 11 games while in his absence, Liverpool managed to shell out 10 goals in just 3 league games.
His strength and understanding of the game have allowed him to settle at Anfield quickly while his dribbling and passing abilities have made the Reds a stronger and more fluid side.
He is easily one of the best summer transfers this season and it is not long before he is regarded as one of the best in the league.
So it would have come as a blow for the Reds if he would have decided to leave in January.
However, the Liverpool fans were given great news today after it was revealed that he would snub Cameroon for Liverpool for yet another time.
According to The Times’ Paul Joyce, Matip will continue his international boycott and will not travel with the national side to Gabon for the AFCONs starting on the 14th of January.
This will come as great news for the Reds who will now miss just one player in their squad in January. Senegalese winger Sadio Mane, is integral to his national team and will travel with the national side leaving Liverpool a bit light in attack.
But with Coutinho returning, Mane might not be missed as much as Matip would have been if he also decided to leave.
Do you think Matip should have played for Cameroon?
