Dortmund open the season with a win over rivals Bayern to lift the German Super Cup
19-year-old, English winger, Jadon Sancho starred in the game for Borussia Dortmund. He assisted the first goal and also struck a superb solo goal leading Dortmund for a win. It was an intense game of football, which saw both the sides playing a fine attacking game.
Borussia Dortmund gave their new signing Nico Schulz his first start in the new colours. New signings Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt couldn’t play due to injuries.
In the opening minutes of the game, a Borussia Dortmund counter-attack lead by Raphael Guerrero who created a chance for Marco Reus was stopped astoundingly by Manuel Neuer. Only a few minutes later, another counter-attack from Dortmund saw Manuel Neuel coming out near the half-line to stop Paco Alcacer. The Spanish striker tried a long-distance shot which missed the goal by inches. Bayern’s Kingsley Coman missed two chances in front of the goal in the opening 45 minutes.
The opening of the second half saw Thiago Alacantra giving away the ball to Sancho, who made a bursting run forward and passed the ball to Alcacer. Paco was quick enough to drive a low shot from the edge of the box, edging past Manuel Neuer into the goal. Bayern tried to come back in the game after conceding a goal. They made a series of attacks but were wasteful in front of the goal. Dortmund goalkeeper, Marwin Hitz made a string of amazing saves, when Bayern came very near to scoring.
In the 69th minute of the game, Jadon Sancho doubled Dortmund’s lead with a stunning solo goal. The two goals sealed the win for Borussia Dortmund, who lifted the DFL Super Cup 2019.
Bayern coach Niko Kovac was unhappy with the result of the game. He said in a post-match interview: “Of course, we’re sad we lost the match today. I think we turned in a decent display, not a very good one, but decent. We were dominant, we made two mistakes Dortmund capitalised on. We failed to take our chances, which is why we lost the match.”
He further added, “We’re in the fourth week of pre-season. It was the first match where everyone played 90 minutes, you can’t expect more in this situation. I’m not dissatisfied, of course, it wasn’t an outstanding performance. We must take our chances and not play into Dortmund’s hands, losing the ball and allowing counters.”
