Brazilian Defender Marquinhos is a transfer target for Manchester United
Manchester United was one of the highest spenders during the summer transfer window of 2014, and they assembled attacking and defensive players during their shopping spree in the market. The incoming attacking talent did join hands with the explosive line up of Rooney, Van Persie, Mata and Co., but the frailties in the defense were obvious as there was an overhauling necessary with Ferdinand, Vidic and Evra leaving Old Trafford. While other than the Leicester City game there has been no serious string of errors by the defense in a single game, there is a pressing need of defenders at Old Trafford who can play the Van Gaal system of football. One name which has now popped up in the series of name is that of Brazilian Marquinhos.
The 20 year old versatile Marcos Aoás Corrêa (a.k.a. Marquinhos) has been one of the brightest prospects to have emerged from Brazil. He started his career at Corinthians and then made the switch to Serie A side Roma, and after spending one season in Italy he made a 31 Million Euro move to cash rich PSG in the summer of 2013. With the first choice defensive targets of Louis Van Gaal not currently available, the Dutchman is now looking for the versatile Brazilian to join Old Trafford’s shaky defense.
Although Marquinhos is still a very young player he can play equally effectively as a central defender, right back or as a defensive midfielder which will help Louis Van Gall as he likes to play his player at different positions, according to his game plan. In the 2012-13 campaign at Roma, Marquinhos made 71 interceptions, 839 successful passes and no errors while marshalling the defense in the league. He had a similar start to his life at PSG in 2013-14 with 38 interceptions, 965 successful passes. This season has seen him start a lesser number of games and this would play on the mind of the defender as his agent has clearly stated that he would like to play wherever the team required but will not be satisfied at the bench.
With the clear interest from Manchester United and other marquee defenders not available it will be interesting to see whether United will test the resolve of the PSG Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi who had labeled the Brazilian youngster as unsellable last summer.
