Arsenal have tried to sign former Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain and were very close to completion of the transfer, according to reports in Italy.
The Gunners have made concrete effort to sign a world class striker all throughout summer as they were rejected by Leicester city’s Jamie Vardy and Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette in the summer.
Calciomercato claims that Arsene Wenger proposed €50m and Olivier Giroud for Higuain but Napoli wanted a minimum of €60m. With Gunners not making further progression, Napoli have sold their prized possession to their direct rivals Juventus in an Italian record transfer of £76.5m.
The 29-year old has attracted interest from a host of clubs as he managed an astonishing 36 goals in Serie A last season which saw break a 66-year old standing record and made him the most prolific striker in the league.
However, Arsenal who were searching for a star striker has got one of their own as Alexis Sanchez has transformed himself into a dynamic attacker and have been prolific as a central forward. With Sanchez playing in the central attack, Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott has shined this season as they are having their best seasons as far as goals are concerned.
Young Iwobi has been excellent on the left wing which left Olivier Giroud to bench for most of the season. The Frenchman, however, made an excellent comeback into the team as he scored a brace against Sunderland and backed it up with a goal against Ludogorets in the Champions League this week.
However, despite his recent performances he lacks the killer instinct that a world class striker like Robert Lewandowski or Luis Suarez possess which is the reason why Arsenal fans and management are not completely relied on him as he primarily works as a central forward and has little influence in other fine margins.
Napoli are still tracking the progress of the 30-year old striker and could make a move for the Frenchman in January as they are currently searching for a striker as their Higuain’s replacement Milik has suffered a cruciate ligament injury last month ruling him out for next few months.
