Real Madrid have been given a minor injury scare ahead of their Champions League clash with Napoli as Cristiano Ronaldo missed Monday’s training session.
The holders of the competition welcome one of this season’s most exciting teams in European football to the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night in what promises to be an entertaining first-leg clash.
However, Ronaldo involvement appears to be doubtful after he sustained a minor injury in Los Blancos’ 3-1 victory over Osasuna at the weekend and as a result trained away from the rest of group as a precautionary measure.
An official statement on the La Liga leaders’ official website read: “Real Madrid continued to prepare for the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie against Napoli, to be played at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.
“Ball work took centre stage in a session that saw Zidane call up Real Madrid Castilla player Enzo.
“The Whites, completed the first session of the week, performing various possession and pressing exercises, ball circulation and crossing and finishing. Cristiano Ronaldo and Coentrão trained inside the facilities.”
Having topped the competition’s scoring charts last season with 16 goals in 12 appearances, the Portuguese international wasn’t able to find the target quite as frequently during the current campaign’s group phase as he netted just twice.
However, Ronaldo has shown throughout his career that he’s just as deadly in front of goal as anyone and is likely to resume full training on Tuesday in a bid to ensure his availability for the visit of the Serie A outfit.
